Worcester Mela is a not-for-profit, non-religious and non-political organisation that has been established by a group of dedicated local volunteers and professionals. Showcasing what is unique and inclusive about South Asian heritage and tradition, we deliver diverse and unique projects that bring communities together.

The Sanskrit word ‘Mela’ has a literal translation of ‘a gathering of people’ but it has come to denote a wider more inclusive meaning, which we like to think of as a ‘festival of togetherness’. With a mission of ‘Uniting the City through Culture, Colour and Creativity’ our first 18 months has seen huge success and we will continue to welcome, educate, and entertain those we engage with. Our vision for 2023-2025 is creative, unique, and full of ambition. After securing 18 months of funding, this is an exciting time to join our team as we develop a multi-disciplinary performance piece, co-created with the community and successful Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation Balbir Singh Dance Company. We are working towards our first stand alone Mela Festival to be held in Worcester and programming many other community and outreach events alongside as well as developing the organisation with mentorship from Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation Kala Sangam.

We are looking for volunteer board members who champion the importance of exceptional leadership, innovative thinking and actively participates in all activities. This is an opportunity to become involved in setting the future direction for supporting and growing Worcester Mela. We want to hear new ideas, get new insights into the communities of Worcester, establish relationships with existing and emerging artists and businesses, and identify new opportunities for celebrating inclusivity and diversity. We would ask for you to bring your professionalism, enthusiasm, and expertise as a volunteer board member.

We meet every 4-6 weeks formally, with an annual general meeting and ad-hoc meetings as needed; these are a mix of online and in-person. Board members will be asked to play an active role in helping to identify and secure financial resources, actively participate in projects that are undertaken and show dedication and commitment in all areas of the organisation’s development. We would be very interested to hear from those that have experience in administration, policies, procedures and governance.

If you are enthused by this opportunity, ready to advocate and support Worcester Mela in achieving its mission, then we want to hear from you!

Please contact our Chair, Jabba Riaz at jabba@worcestermela.org.uk for more information and to arrange an initial discussion.

We look forward to hearing from you.
